Speaker Spotlight: Meet Dr. Narjes Allahrabbi

Founder, CTO, and Co-CEO of Fertilead

Can you discuss a challenge you faced in the early stages of your startup and how you overcame it?

During the early stages of my startup, I faced the challenge of losing my potential co-founder, who found an opportunity elsewhere. This set me back as I had to start the search for a new partner from scratch. However, I leveraged my network and searched for a suitable partner by attending workshops and incubator/accelerator programs, where I searched for potential partners. Through this process, I, fortunately, met Hafsa, who shares my passion for bringing this medical device to couples who need it, and she became my co-founder in the venture.

Can you discuss your company’s approach to innovation and how you stay ahead of the competition?

Our company’s approach to innovation is rooted in a deep understanding of the problem and a commitment to finding the most effective solutions. Can you tell us about your background and how it led you to become a startup entrepreneur?

Engineering is about problem-solving. It’s about making people’s lives better with innovative solutions to everyday problems. Unfortunately, infertility is a common issue that does not have an easy, affordable solution yet. The idea for this startup came to be when I realized that my innovation could help thousands of people every year if I could just get it into their hands as a product.

Can you walk us through your decision-making process for starting your current company?

This company builds on technology I have worked on in previous years during my time as a postdoctoral fellow in Singapore. The solution we innovated can be life-changing for couples with male-factor infertility, as current treatment options just aren’t good enough. The gold-standard treatment has multiple risks associated with it, and the alternatives have very low success rates. Knowing that when this innovation is turned into a product and is used during the infertility treatment process will boost the couple’s chance of success, I had to develop this device. Being a mother of two children myself, I empathize with couples who are struggling with having babies. I have always had a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship, and have been attending entrepreneurship training programs even throughout my parental leave of absence. Starting this company to combine my passion and solution was easily the best decision for me.
